Any producer, importer or seller of an industrial product or any service provider whose activity is covered by a standard can obtain certification or the right to use a collective certification mark when it exists. If there is no standard, a group of manufacturers or service providers can initiate a collective approach at the level of a professional organization so that a request is submitted by it to an existing certification body. An approach of individual origin, if it does not correspond to a collective need, has little chance of succeeding to the extent that the standards must be developed on a collective and consensual basis.

References for a quality management system
In 1987, ISO published the first international quality management system (QMS) standards. The core of the ISO 9000 series of standards are standards providing quality assurance models and guides for developing and implementing a quality management system. In order to adapt to new realities, the ISO 9000 series standards are regularly reviewed and revised, with 4 important standards of the series:
- ISO 9000: 2000 / Quality management systems: Essential principles and vocabulary. This standard aims to explain the main terms and principles attached to the standard.
- ISO 9001: 2000 / Quality management systems: Requirements. This is the only standard that can be registered.
- ISO 9004: 2000 / Quality management systems: Guidelines for improving performance. This standard provides avenues for continuous improvement in order to increase the productivity and efficiency of the organization
- ISO 9011: 2000 / Guidelines for audits and environment (future standard).
Standards for an environmental management system
The international organization for standards has published the ISO 14000 series of standards relating to the requirements for an “environmental management system”. These standards seek to reconcile voluntary approach and continuous improvement. The ISO 14000 series standards make it easier for the company to comply with regulations and achieve better environmental performance. They are intended to be a general management guide and emphasize means, without providing specific requirements as to results.
The company's organizational approach is based on two main principles: the commitment to a policy and the establishment of a self-improving system to deploy this policy. The integration of an environmental dimension into the company's strategy is essentially based on the principles of a continuous improvement loop. The ISO 14001 standard provides system-wide requirements that can be used for third-party certification or self-declaration. In addition to these requirements, explanations appear in the form of an informative annex. The ISO 14004 standard, not certifiable by construction, provides practical elements in the form of examples and advice in order to facilitate the implementation of the environmental management system.
These two standards constitute benchmarks for internal or external audits (third-party certification). Eco-audit is the name given to the Environmental Management and Audit System. The Eco-audit is not an environmental management standard. This is a new approach in Florida created to encourage organizations of all sizes and from all sectors to engage in a voluntary process of continuous improvement of their environmental performance. The Eco-audit rules are established by state regulations. Its objectives are to promote good environmental management of industrial sites and to establish active communication with the public.
